Transpersonal Psychology, Trauma and Transformation

Saturday 16th June 2018 at BPS Offices, Tabernacle Street, London

We will examine why there is such a strong connection between transformation and trauma. From the 'dark night of the soul' to the concept of 'spiritual crisis,' spirituality and mental turmoil have always been closely intertwined. But why do spiritual awakening and spiritual transformation often follow intense psychological turmoil? Why are people who undergo personal or spiritual transformation frequently diagnosed with psychosis? What is the relationship between psychosis and spiritual awakening? The workshop will include a practical/experiential element (include Taoist approaches), as we examine approaches - as both therapists and individual spiritual seekers - to harness the potentially transformative aspects of psychological turmoil, and support those who undergoing this transformation.

Speakers

Dr Steve Taylor (Leeds Beckett University, author of The Leap, The Calm Center and many other books) will speak on ‘The Peak at the Nadir: Psychological Turmoil before and after Spiritual Awakening.’ Steve will describe how intense psychological suffering can give rise both to temporary awakening experiences and permanent spiritual awakening. He will also explain how disturbances can arise in the process of awakening, and how these may be mistaken for psychosis. Steve will also lead one or more meditative exercises.

Dr Gloria Durá-Vilá (Senior Consultant Psychiatrist and Medical Lead in the NHS, Honorary Lecturer at the Mental Health Neuroscience Department, University College London) will speak on ‘Sadness, Depression and the Dark Night of the Soul,’ based on her book of the same title. She will warn about the risks of medicalising normal episodes of sadness, and raising doubts about the validity of the current diagnostic classification for depressive disorder.

Dr April Woodward (Keele University Medical School, Alef Trust) and Dr Scott Buckler (University of Nottingham, University of Worcester) will lead an applied workshop on ‘From turmoil to transcendence: a 21st Century Taoist Approach to Acceptance and Restoring Balance to the Mind, Body and Spirit’. The workshop will provide practical, research-informed practices derived through their respective doctoral studies and combined sixty years of Taoist martial arts experience.
