Transitions in psychology: from school, though university and into work

Wednesday 19th November 2014 at BPS Offices, Tabernacle Street, London

The primary purpose of the event will be to examine transitions in terms of the study and application of Psychology. In particular it will attempt to broaden debate upon the transfer in and out of university study. The first transition the day aims to cover is to connect preparatory study at FE level with expectations approaching and within HE.

Alongside this, it will consider preparations within HE towards a career as an academic who practises teaching and research in Psychology to fulfil the cycle via PhD study, Postdoctoral appointments and TA/RA posts. It will also give reference to alternatives as an applied Psychologist and the discipline's applicability in the wider job market.

It aims to achieve this through two keynote speakers in each of these areas and then fulsome discussion in a choice of breakout sessions with invited expert discussants and open discussion on how people's careers move in, out and ahead in Psychology.

Who is the course intended for?

Members of DARTP and teachers of Psychology to include those involved with pre-tertiary, undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Undergraduate and postgraduate students seeking discussion and debate upon transitions. Academics and university administrators interested in overseeing the combination of research and teaching as part of a HE career path in Psychology. Employers interested in what the study of Psychology may afford, at whatever level.

Objectives of the Workshop.

To open up debate on an integrated career in Psychology from school through university to employment
To bring together factions of Psychology teaching and to ease individuals' transitions between various stages of study or career
