Using Motivational Interviewing in coaching: a 2-day Masterclass

Thursday 10th – Friday 11th October 2019 at BPS Offices, London

Motivational Interviewing is a conversational style aiming to help people discover and strengthen their own reasons for change, as well as their confidence or self-efficacy about changing. It pays particular attention to the language clients use and the quality of the relationship factors in play in the coaching conversation. It is or can be very complementary and 'integratable' with other coaching approaches, paying attention as it does to core and generic skills and processes which occur in coaching conversations - engaging, focussing, strengthening, affirming, evoking solutions, noticing strengths, developing alliance and collaboration, building hope and optimism, agreeing a way forwards, etc.

MI has been shown to be effective in a very wide range of contexts, exploring a range of different concerns and issues, when delivered by range of different professionals. It us being used in healthcare, schools, corporate, addictions, community, justice, return to work and other settings.

The session is aimed at psychologists, students and coaches interested in behavioural change and working with clients who may be stuck or finding change difficult. As a two-day intensive programme, attendees can expect to leave the programme being able to use a wide range of MI tools in their coaching practice.

He is one of the few MI trained coaches who have written about how MI can be transferred to coaching conversations, with both book chapters and journal articles on MI coaching.
