Spacing Out & Cracking Up: Identifying & treating dissociation following trauma

Dr Fiona Kennedy

2.00pm - 5.00pm, Tuesday 2nd June 2015 at The Ark Conference Centre, Basingstoke

In addition to the 4th Annual Military Psychology Conference we will be running the Military Psychology Workshops 2015.

Following her very successful workshop at the 3rd Military Psychology Conference, Dr Fiona Kennedy has kindly agreed to repeat the event so as to allow a wider audience to participate. Though this workshop is run under the auspices of the Annual Military Conference, this workshop will be of benefit to those working with trauma in a variety of environments, including the emergency services.

Spacing out is when we dissociate from current experiences and go into emergency shut down, resulting in the mind being protected from overwhelming traumatic input.

Cracking up is when we dissociate one aspect of our self from another, so that we have one ‘personality’ when trauma is present and another when things go back to normal.

Both these responses are expected and protective during trauma, often allowing us to function more effectively than otherwise: problems only develop if the dissociative responses continue inappropriately in the absence of present trauma and start interfering with our lives and even our conscious awareness.

Dr Fiona Kennedy, a former NHS Head of Psychology, has a long-standing interest in dissociation both as researcher and clinician. She has worked in the NHS and privately with many dissociative presentations including those with a military context. She has developed the Wessex Dissociation Scale along with other clinicians from the BPS Wessex Region, and co-edited a recent book on dissociation.

The workshop will be followed by a networking event and related talk by:

Professor Jamie Hacker Hughes
Director, Institute for Veterans and Families Studies, Anglia Ruskin University President Elect, British Psychological Society

If you have any queries please contact us via the event hotline on 01332 227775.
