NWG Freedom Walk

Sunday 18th October 2015

There are more slaves in the world today than at any other point in human history, with an estimated 27 million in bondage across the globe.

Human trafficking is the illegal trade of human beings, mainly for the purposes of forced labor and sex trafficking. As the world's fastest growing criminal industry, it affects every nation across the globe. Every 30 seconds, someone becomes a victim of modern-day slavery.

Thousands of men women and children have been trafficked into, within and out of the UK in recent times. They have been trafficked from every corner of the world and are found in ordinary cities and towns across the UK. A case was reported in 2014 in Derby.

Traffickers also target the vulnerable within the UK, moving them around from place to place and making money out of their exploitation. Victims of trafficking are victims of slavery and the UK has a duty to protect them, provide a safe haven and prosecute those who exploit them.

The NWG Network is inviting members of the public and organisations to take part in a Freedom Walk in support of National Anti Slavery Day on Sunday 18th October 2015.

Meeting Point: 10:00am for a 10:30am start outside Derby Cathedral, 18-19 Iron Gate, Derby, DE1 3GP

The walk will commence at the Silk Mill, Derby DE1 3AF covering approximately 4 miles through Darley Park and past the site of several historic former cotton mills. The walk is an easy access route suitable for wheel chair users. The walk will conclude at the front of Derby Cathedral.

The weather is set to be decent and the park will no doubt look beautiful with the trees wearing their autumnal colours, what better way to spend a Sunday morning?

We are hoping that you will be able to join us to show our solidarity and raise awareness of this global issue.
