Practicing what you preach: The what, where, when, and how of the self-practice of cognitive-behavioural intervention

This interactive workshop will introduce participants to the concept of the formal self-practice of cognitive-behavioural intervention:

  • Theoretical underpinnings
  • Purposes
  • Implementation

Participants will be able to engage in self-practice exercises, explore evaluation methods, and develop an action plan for self-practice as part of on-going CPD and supervision processes. By the end of the workshop participants should be able to:

  • Describe theoretical underpinnings of the self-practice of cognitive-behavioural intervention
  • Identify and evaluate current self-practices
  • Discuss purposes for possible future self-practice
  • Explore adherence to self-practice processes
  • Develop on-going action planning methods for the use of self-practices
  • Access and evaluate associated research literature

Please note, lunch is not provided for this event but cafes are available on campus.

Learning outcomes and objectives

  • Understand the fundamental theoretical principles of self-practice of cognitive-behavioural intervention,
  • Identify existing self-practice
  • Engage in self-practice exercises
  • Discuss how to evaluate self-practice
  • Discuss limitations of self-practice

Who is the course intended for?

This workshop is suitable for a range of individuals including postgraduate students, trainee psychologists/scientists, and experienced practitioners. Both those with a research and/or practitioner focus will benefit from the workshop.

Stephen has fourteen years’ experience of consultancy and teaching (Higher Education), has published research relating to self-practice, and has ongoing research projects in this area.

Speakers and Facilitators

Dr Stephen Pack

Dr Stephen Pack is a Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology at the University of Hertfordshire, a Chartered Psychologist, and a registered practitioner with the HCPC. Stephen has an interest in the development and maintenance of the working alliance and creative professional practice processes. In particular, he is interested in exploring how practitioners ‘use’ themselves as intervention. Also, Stephen has interests relating to mentoring, reflective practice, and self-regulation in both sport and higher education contexts. In relation to professional practice Stephen has worked for example in Polar exploration, dog agility, cycling, golf, judo, archery, and has been member of a steering committee for an exercise-referral scheme for mental health service-users.
