Introduction to the COM-B model and the basics of Behaviour Change

Thursday 22nd June 2017 at Ulster University Belfast Campus

The COM-B model is based on evidence that successful behaviour change is underpinned by three key factors - Capability, Opportunity and Motivation. Understanding the model enables those interested in changing behaviour to develop interventions. Since changing behaviour is central to the prevention of illness and the improvement of health the model is of interest to all health professionals.

For any behaviour to occur, we must have the capability and opportunity to engage in it, and be motivated to engage in it at the relevant time more than any competing behaviour. Capability, opportunity, motivation and behaviour interact as a system. The COM-B model has been developed to capture this in order to identify targets for behaviour change interventions. By the end of this session, attendees should be able to use the COM-B model to understand a given behaviour and identify potential targets for change.

This workshop will be facilitated by Olga Perski from University College London.
