Administering and interpreting WAIS-IV Workshop

Monday 29th October to Wednesday 31st October 2018 at Stranmillis University College, Belfast

This workshop provides delegates with the theoretical knowledge and practice to demonstrate their competence in the administration, scoring and interpretation of the WAIS-IV. In addition delegates will be have the opportunity to demonstrate their competence in delivering both verbal and written feedback. The workshop encourages delegates to work collaboratively with those assessed, using qualitative observations alongside the numerical scores to obtain a fuller picture of an individual’s cognitive abilities.

Target audience

This workshop is intended for post graduate trainee counselling psychologists and post qualified counselling psychologists who wish to be able to administer, score and interpret the WAIS-IV. No previous experience of using the WAIS-IV is required but the opportunity follow the workshop with appropriate supervision will be necessary.

Learning outcomes and objectives:

Unit 1: Fundamental Underpinnings

  • Knowledge of test principles relevant to the WAIS
  • Knowledge of statistical principles relevant to the WAIS
  • History & Theory of Intelligence Testing Pre and Post Weschler Scales
  • Clinical applications of the WAIS
  • Diversity awareness: inappropriate applications of the WAIS
  • Awareness of test governance

Unit 2: Administering the WAIS

  • Administration of subtests
  • Start and Stop rules
  • Reversal and Discontinue rules
  • Importance of parallel qualitative assessment

Unit 3: Scoring

  • Scoring of subtests
  • Common scoring errors

Unit 4: Interpretation

  • Fundamentals of interpretation
  • Limitations of interpretation
  • Integration of qualitative analysis

Unit 5: Communicating Results

  • The importance of providing appropriate feedback
  • Providing verbal feedback
  • Providing written reports

Please bring your own copy of the WAIS-IV test materials, forms and manual with you to the workshop. If this is not possible please let the organiser know in advance of attendance.

Speakers and Facilitators

Dr Susan van Scoyoc

Facilitator
Susan has extensive experience in the use of the WAIS as well as years of training and supervising psychologists embarking on their first use of the WAIS. She offers training in small group environments which she believes is most conducive to learning for psychologist colleagues Susan is on the BPS registers for supervision, a founding member of the register of psychologists specialising in psychotherapy and on the psychometric testing register. Susan was awarded the BPS Professional Practice Board “Psychologist of the Year” (2012) for her contribution to psychology by bringing psychological knowledge to the courts in her role as an expert witness.
