Attendees should have a working knowledge of the ACT model and clinical experience in the application of ACT. This workshop will refocus on ACT as a functional analytic behavior therapy that captures the full complexity of psychological suffering. Focusing on ACT as rooted in functional analysis allows clinicians optimal flexibility in dealing with even the most complex clients. The workshop will also use the latest ideas and findings from our research on perspective-taking to examine why ACT must target a client's sense of self in a fundamental way in order to facilitate lasting behavior change that is in line with the client values. The workshop will also show how a basic RFT account of metaphor can enable clinicians to construct highly targeted, functionally precise clinical metaphors with their clients. The workshop will include role plays and reviews of clients to show attendees how functional analysis, metaphor and perspective-taking can be integrated and are pivotal to using ACT with all clients.
