Public Sector Skills Challenge Breakfast Launch

Venue: Walkers Stadium, Leicester
Date:Tuesday 30th September 2008

Introduction

This breakfast meeting is for Chief Executives of Local Authorities, Fire, Police and Probation in the East Midlands.

The Prime Minister has set out a bold ambition to create 5 million skilled jobs over the next decade to give the British workforce a real stake in our economic success and a full share in the nation’s prosperity.

As the largest employment sector with 520,000 employees or 28% of the region’s workforce we believe there is a central role for the public sector to play in skills and employment, alongside its core role in service delivery.

We want the East Midlands to be at the forefront of this initiative working with you, as public service employers, to give a lead to the wider employer community in making this vision a reality.

This is an opportunity to work with key regional partners, to focus on joint investment to extend training, including Apprenticeships and the acquisition of skills across your workforce as well as accessing the measures available through the significant and ongoing expansion of the Train to Gain Service.
The Government launched the Skills Pledge last year as a voluntary public commitment by the leadership of an organisation to support all employees to gain skills both for their own personal growth and to enhance an organisation’s productivity.  Since June 2007 over 250 organisations in the region have made a commitment to the Skills Pledge, including 16 public sector organisations covering almost 65,000 employees.

Attendance at this event will give you the opportunity to take the first step in making the Skills Pledge and responding to the Skills Challenge offered to you.

We very much hope you will be able to support this key initiative which we regard as a top priority for the region.

This Breakfast Event will be followed on the same morning by a seminar offered to Heads of HR and Learning and Development from your organisations to take this agenda further with representatives from Training Providers and Brokers who specialise in working with public sector organisations in the region.  Invitations to this seminar will be sent out separately and you are very welcome to stay for the rest of the morning as well.

We look forward to welcoming you on 30th September.
