Metro, the West Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, has been leading the way in the implementation of Local Transport Plans. Having been awarded Beacon Council Status, for Better Public Transport, in April 2004, Metro is holding two Accessibility Planning conferences, through the Beacon Peer Support scheme. The scheme recognises best practice and innovation in local government and has engendered an extensive period of dissemination activity during the one-year award period.

These two one-day conferences aim to support local transport authorities and their partners in developing their full accessibility strategies for submission to the Department for Transport in March 2006.

As a new responsibility for local transport authorities, extensive Accessibility Planning guidance, training and support have been made available through a range of sources.

These Beacon conferences aim to support and complement the growing accessibility planning toolkit and explore how the processes in the best practice guidance can be fitted into a real world context by:

  • focusing on leading edge examples of delivery
  • offering practical workshops on key development and delivery issues
  • enabling peer to peer networking to compare successes, challenges and progress
