INTRODUCTION

The London Development Agency (LDA) works to ensure that all London’s communities and businesses can benefit from their city’s success, encouraging them to achieve their true potential. Women make significant and vital contributions to the London economy. Women starting up in business will tend to provide a more immediate contribution to the economy, around one in five women come into self-employment from unemployment compared with around one in fifteen for men but they still face barriers to economic participation. Discrimination, lack of access to affordable childcare and the limited availability of part-time and flexible working can all prevent women from playing a full role in London’s workforce. That's why the LDA along with partners are developing a regional women’s enterprise programme and action plan, which will enable us to address the issues surrounding the survival and growth of women’s enterprises as well as increasing the number of women starting and developing businesses.

We fully support the aims of the Women in Business Conference and we hope that you will be encouraged to develop your business, your skills and employment prospects and your personal life. You’ll hear inspiring lessons in developing your own business from successful women entrepreneurs, and we hope you’ll take full advantage of the information, knowledge and practical support provided by the conference seminars and the great networking opportunities available.

To find out more about how we're working with our partners to break down barriers to enterprise start up, growth and competitiveness, and employment by making sure that employers improve their recruitment practices and that everyone has real access to skills, training and job opportunities please visit www.lda.gov.uk

WOMEN IN MANAGEMENT

Pera is an international training and technology consultancy group that provides business support services to clients to enhance their competitiveness in increasingly global markets. In the arena of management development, Pera assists in growing people in the right direction for the right reasons. One example of this is the work Pera is doing in East London with its Women into Management programme.

This programme provides an opportunity for women to gain a managerial qualification and improve their leadership and communication skills, equipping them with the necessary expertise and confidence to further their careers. At the same time Pera will work with employers to ensure there is a match between the needs of the business and the aspirations of the individual.

This programme has been made possible by funding from the European Social Fund and support from the Learning and Skills Council both of which aim to tackle long term unemployment and provide opportunities for those disadvantaged in the labour market. The LSC plays an important role in the strategic growth of London East, raising the skill levels of adults and providing vital services enabling them to effectively contribute to the local economy. This exciting project is delivered through Pera's Learning and Skills team. To join the programme or to receive more information please contact Nicola Bridgett, Susan Batchelor or Laura McCartney on 020 8596 5392 or visit the website www.womenintomanagement.com
