Metro and SYPTE, together with major bus operators, have implemented the largest bus real time information system in the UK. Over 2000 buses are equipped with GPS equipment and over 24,000 journeys are tracked each day. Public outputs include SMS (as well as web, WAP and bus stop displays) and over 2.4 million text messages have been sent to customers. Market research shows that awareness is high and that the system is generating additional bus travel.

Bus operators are making extensive use of the system to improve scheduling and schedule adherence – and traffic light priority is assisting buses to beat congestion.

The conference will provide a detailed insight to the challenges of implementing such a large and complex system across an area, which includes the major cities of Leeds and Sheffield. It will also provide a range of insights into the next steps in using telematics to improve the offer to customers and the attractiveness of bus travel.
