We will endeavour to allocate you to your choice of workshops but as this will be done on a strictly first-come first-served basis, we recommend that you return your form quickly to avoid disappointment.  There will be an opportunity to attend 2 workshops during the day.
Workshop 1 - Numeracy for Literacy Specialists
Workshop Facilitators – Helen Oughton, Lecturer, L4 Cert for Numeracy Subject Specialists, University of Derby and Skills for Life tutor, Derbyshire County Council Adult Community Education
This Workshop will appeal to:
Literacy specialists who need to teach occasional numeracy.  The focus will be on classroom practice with ideas for successful approaches to teaching numeracy and hands-on use of practical resources.  Updated from last year, covering new topics from effective use of questioning to helping with times tables!
Workshop 2 – Catching Confidence
Workshop Facilitators - Julie Frost, Development & Quality Officer, Derbyshire Learning and Development Consortium for the VCS and Sarah Legood, SfL Manager, SEDC.
This Workshop will:
Introduce delegates to Catching Confidence which is an approach to identify and record changes in confidence during learning.  It is a way of helping learners to reflect on their confidence in the learning situation and record any changes, which arise.  It is particularly helpful where learning is not accredited and fits comfortably alongside the RARPA (Recognising and Recording Progress and Achievement) process. Gaining confidence is one of the keys to the successful development of literacy, language and numeracy skills through the governments’ Skills for Life strategy and is relevant to the national Learning and Skills Council’s widening participation strategy.

Workshop 3 – Making e-learning work
Workshop Facilitators – Mal Finch, e2e project manager, Derbyshire County Council Adult Community Education
This Workshop will appeal to:
Literacy and numeracy specialists who have not yet used e-learning in their practice but who wish to do so and to those who already have some experience of e-learning.
The workshop will look at:
• ways of creating interactive learning resources using text, images and sound
• on-line learning resources and useful (free!) downloadable software
• ways of successfully embedding e-learning in your practice
Unfortunately, this is not a hands-on session, but you will go away with some easy-to-use templates, ‘how 2’ guides and resources and with some practical ideas as to how you can make e-learning work for you and your learners.
Workshop 4 – Dyslexia, Phonics and Auditory Skills
Workshop Facilitator – Marion Davies and Heather Andrzejewski, specialist teachers from the Derby College Additional Learning Support team.
This Workshop will:
Investigate the difficulties that some students experience with auditory skills and the impact this can have on literacy development. The workshop aims to provide some practical solutions to these difficulties.
Workshop 5 – Working with Learners from other Countries
Workshop Facilitator – Tertia Salt, ESOL Co-ordinator, University of Derby
The workshop will explore:
What is it like? The experience of the teacher and the learner/Identifying the problems - how to address the issues/ Creating the ambience - Class climate for learning / getting to know the learner / Encouraging learning / How to learn a language.
