Mental Capacity Act (2005): Implications for Psychologists

| Introduction | Agenda | Location | Booking Form |

The Mental Capacity Act (2005) provides legal frameworks for the assessment of mental capacity and for defining ‘best interests’ for people who lack the capacity to make decisions for themselves.

The British Psychological Society has taken a lead in publishing specialist guidance for applied psychologists.

The Study Day provides an opportunity to hear from the authors of the guidance and aims to inform delegates about:
• Psychological assessment of mental capacity
• Psychological aspects of decision-making processes
• How to determine ‘best interests’ with people not able to make decisions for themselves

Presentations will be supplemented by discussion using case scenarios.

Attention will also be drawn to the implications of ‘Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards’ and new professional roles associated with both the Mental Capacity Act (2005) and the new Mental Health Act

Content will be relevant for psychologists, psychiatrists and other staff undertaking specialist assessments, Independent Mental Capacity Advocates and agency leads responsible for the implementation of the Mental Capacity Act.
